3 Simple Steps To Be The Change You Wish To See In Your Work Life

Ever feel uncomfortable being in status quo? It is important to keep in mind that it is okay to feel this way and often, a good thing! This happens to even the best of us. We work hard, we work late and when you take a step back to look at your routine, you wonder when was the last time you had a break. If you are feeling this way, making some key changes could offer a better work-life you didn’t even know you were looking for.

1. Changing your work routine

As much as you love following your colourful to-do lists and neatly arranged calendar schedules, do you ever feel that some days, you are just not as productive as you would like to be? Perhaps more time is needed for you to complete a complex task. Perhaps you need a project that allows more room to show your creativity. Whatever it is that you feel you need increased productivity in, changing up your daily work routine can be the way to go!

Consider setting mini goals

Improvements take time and so does an increase in productivity. Set mini goals so that you do not commit to more than what is realistic for you. Work on each milestone that contributes towards your end goal.

Try a different working space

Ever felt food coma creeping up on you after your lunch break? Your brain needs some exercise to lose the food coma. Try shifting your workspace to an open meeting room or a high table for an hour or two.  A change in your workspace could be just what you need to keep your brain awake.

When you are making changes in your work routine, do take note to change it up in a way that doesn’t upset your boss (like taking an unplanned vacation) or affect your colleagues (making your teammates do your work).

2. Changing your work-life-balance

The notion of having work-life-balance is a popular topic these days, especially amongst Millennials. If you feel that you want to pursue work-life-balance as well, you will have to take charge of your life and know that it is yours to live in whatever way that you want, because you can.

Your priorities and goals also need to be worked out. What is most important to you? Having free time for your hobbies? Spending time with loved ones? Travelling to see the world? Maybe all you want is just more time to rest – that’s alright. The point is to figure out what matters most to you and what you value.

Take determined action and chase after the life you want. This can be a little scary, but if you know your desired outcome, then you just need to steer back to the course if you veer to the sideline.

3. Changing your work and working on your terms

Time is a scarce resource. List down the regular tasks that you feel take time away from you, and then plan your budget to see if you are able to pay a little more for them so that you can spend your time saved on more valuable things.

For example, if home maintenance is taking up your time, try a service like Gigworks to have someone do it for you. You could even consider services such as hiring a virtual assistant. Whatever the task, Gigworks will help you find it.

When most people decide to make changes or transform their work life, they tend to only focused on the end results. While results are a motivator to get you started, they are rarely enough reason for you to continue. Some people procrastinate on changing their lives because they are fearful of the next step and face uncertainty.

For people who want to change their career, they are aware that their current situation is not right for them and usually have an idea of the type of work and the amount of money they would like to make. However, they have no idea how to get from where they are right now to where they want to be. This generates a feeling of overwhelm as they are unsure if they can accomplish their goal.
