Hacktoberfest 2023: A Complete Guide

Attention to all developers:

With the changing seasons and the onset of winter, October marks a transition that is observed worldwide. For professionals in the technology sector, October is an occasion of celebration known as Hacktoberfest – an event that, over the years, has led to the resolution of several spam-related issues.

What is the reason behind celebrating “Hacktoberfest”?

DigitalOcean, in association with its community partners, takes immense pleasure in announcing the commencement of Hacktoberfest 2023 – an annual event aimed at motivating software engineers, developers, and coding enthusiasts to make noteworthy contributions to open-source projects. This month-long event offers a platform to contribute in various ways.

  1. Create and share your own open-source project for collaboration
  2. Make a contribution to the progress of an open-source project by submitting a pull request
  3. Organize a meetup
  4. Inspire and mentor aspiring engineers and tech enthusiasts
  5. Provide direct funding to open-source initiatives

Is it worth the effort? Why should I take part?

The engineers at Works possess exceptional proficiency in their domains, and Hacktoberfest is the perfect platform to demonstrate their expertise.

Contributing to open-source projects not only allows you to give back but also helps you broaden your knowledge, sharpen your skills, and connect with other individuals who share similar interests.

Hacktoberfest commenced with 676 participants eight years ago and has tremendously expanded to a community of more than 150,000 supporters, who showcase their fervor by making contributions such as pull requests, participating in international events, and engaging in other activities.

Whether you’re just starting with a concept or already deeply involved in developing a project, Hacktoberfest is a fantastic way to gain inspiration and motivation for your work.

As a developer, there are multiple ways to express your gratitude towards open-source, including submitting pull requests, participating in events, and offering financial support. As a token of appreciation, you may qualify for exclusive items, such as stickers and t-shirts. We strongly suggest considering a contribution to these initiatives.

The developer aims to onboard new contributors and will share information on how to participate in any appealing projects that come up during searches.

GitLab Integration

DigitalOcean and other community partners have unveiled the eighth edition of Hacktoberfest, which will now recognize quality merge requests made using GitLab, in addition to the conventional pull requests made through GitHub.

A Spam-Free Zone

Participants of Hacktoberfest 2023 can be confident that the spam assaults observed in preceding years have been taken care of. Pull requests directed at repositories stored on GitLab with ‘Hacktoberfest’ mentioned in the subject line will qualify for the event once they are endorsed and authorized by a maintainer. To be eligible for the free, exclusive merchandise, participants must submit four pull requests that are accepted by an invited repository.

Get Involved

You can join at any time between now and October 31, so you have just over a month left to participate.
