Techniques for Building Your Software Engineer Online Identity

By 2022, communication with billions of people from around the world will be possible from the comfort of our own homes through smartphones, and there is no doubt that social media has become an indispensable part of our lives. Not only that, but it has also developed into a critical promotional tool for corporations of all sizes. With the increased amount of time that people are spending on social media rather than television, a variety of new jobs have been created in the digital space, such as content development, media management, digital marketing, and most recently, social media influencing. Companies are now enlisting the help of popular influencers to promote their products and services by paying them to incorporate their messaging into their content.

Software engineers who are passionate about leveraging technology to make a positive impact on the world can use social media as a platform to make their mark on the technological landscape of Asia and beyond. From developer advocacy to influencer marketing, telecommuting jobs, and paid speaking engagements, the opportunities available to software engineers on social media are numerous. As Tim Sanders once said, “Your network is your wealth”, and making a beneficial contribution to the IT industry, developing a personal brand, networking professionally, and monetizing social media activity are all achievable. The challenge lies in being able to market oneself effectively and expand one’s social circle on any given platform.

In the year 2022, it will be increasingly important for Software Engineers, as well as other professionals, to make an effort to strengthen and expand their online presence in order to increase their networking opportunities. There are several ways in which this can be accomplished; for example, they can create a professional website or blog, join online discussion groups, use social media to their advantage, or create online tutorials or classes. Additionally, they can also attend virtual conferences and industry events to increase their visibility, as well as gain valuable insights from industry experts. By taking these steps, professionals can maximise their exposure, build valuable connections, and increase their chances of attaining their desired career goals.

  1. Blogging: Writing a blog is an excellent way to express your own interests, activities, and reflections in an online diary. As a leader in the tech industry, you have the unique opportunity to share insights, lessons, and new developments in your field. Medium is an ideal platform to start a blog and publish content, as it is well-known and frequented by a large number of digital content users and creators. Plus, it’s completely free to sign up for an account. However, having a personal website is important, as writing on other people’s platforms is like building a home on someone else’s land. You can also drive traffic to your own website by publishing technical articles on popular media sources, such as FreeCodeCamp. With a higher search engine optimisation (SEO) ranking, you will be able to reach a wider audience.
  2. Vlogging: Creating video content about your interests, activities and passions is known as “vlogging.” YouTube is the most widely used platform for vlogs, followed by Instagram’s Live Feed and Facebook’s Live Feed. In comparison to a blog, a vlog is more engaging, as it is easier for people to watch videos. Getting started in the video industry is straightforward; you need to identify a need in the market, acquire a camera, and launch a YouTube channel or Instagram account to share your work. Additionally, you have the option of doing both video blogging and regular blogging on your own website. With enough followers, you may even generate revenue from YouTube and increase your network.
  3. Twitter: Despite being the go-to social networking platform for those in the Information Technology (IT) industry, many individuals in this field still lack the required knowledge to leverage it to their benefit. Acquiring a large number of quality followers can boost one’s influence on Twitter. The reach of posts is directly proportional to the number of followers. Consequently, gaining more followers on Twitter is essential. However, building a sizeable Twitter following requires a considerable investment of time, effort, and dedication. For example, I began using Twitter in 2022 and this year I have achieved 400 followers in only four months, which is the most I have earned in my Twitter history (even though I started a bit late).

Follower growth on Twitter may be aided by the following strategies:

  1. Maintain a high standard of production quality: In order to ensure successful branding initiatives, it is essential to identify a particular market need and then provide continuous, informative, and engaging content. To streamline the process, there are various technologies available that can be used to automate the publishing process. Applications such as Buffer and Hootsuite can be used to not only schedule social media updates in advance, but also to measure how people interact with existing content, allowing you to produce relevant material that resonates with your audience. Additionally, it is beneficial to have a document on hand to record any ideas or inspirations that come to mind.
  2. Recognise and interact with influential people: Engaging with the tweets of popular users is an effective way to gain new followers. When a person with a substantial follower base tweets, it is likely to increase the reach of the post exponentially. Taking advantage of this, it is a smart move to join the conversation in the hopes of being noticed by the original poster, and thereby potentially acquiring some of their followers.
  3. Find your niche and start a follow-for-follow: Having a significant number of mutual followers on Twitter can be a great way to draw more attention to your account. By tweeting creative and engaging content, you can prompt others to interact with you, whether it be through likes, retweets, or following your account. If people enjoy your content and it resonates with your brand, they are likely to follow you back. It’s important to demonstrate authority by regularly removing inactive followers, thereby maintaining a follower count that is higher than your own. As your following increases, you won’t need to rely on the ‘follow for follow’ tactic as much.
  4. Participate in a group of developers or other professionals: By joining online communities related to your interests, you have the potential to make a wide range of new friends. For example, if these groups plan online events, it is important to use the appropriate hashtags when tweeting about them so that other participants can find and follow your posts. Additionally, when attending such events, you should make the most of the opportunity to direct attendees to your social media accounts and website.
  5. Social media advertisements may help you spread the word about your content and business. Using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram to promote your content can be a great way to reach a large audience and boost your content’s SEO. However, there are significant monetary expenses associated with this form of branding. Each service offers various ad packages and it is important to select the one that best suits your advertising goals. Through social media advertisements, you can target a wide range of potential customers, monitor their interactions with your content, and collect valuable data.
  6. LinkedIn: In 2022, it is essential to have a LinkedIn profile in order to obtain a job or network with other professionals. However, many people may not be taking full advantage of the platform. It is important to ensure that your profile is always up-to-date with pertinent information including your current position, description, accomplishments, education, talents, and hobbies, as well as a professional-looking profile picture. Additionally, it is wise to develop professional relationships with a wide network of experts who share similar interests. Lastly, make sure that the industry and job position philtres on your profile are accurate and current, as this will make it easier for recruiters to find you when searching for potential candidates.
  7. Github: When assessing a software engineer‘s credentials, GitHub is frequently the only dependable source. To maximise the impact of a GitHub profile, it is important to make consistent contributions to open-source initiatives and to showcase your own projects on the page. Each project should have a detailed ReadMe file that includes the project’s technology stack and other relevant information. Furthermore, it is advisable to ensure that all additions and modifications to a repository, even if it is private, are visible.

I sincerely hope that the guidance I have provided here will be helpful as you strive to create an indelible brand through the use of social media that will open up new professional and personal opportunities, draw skilled individuals to your cause, and have a positive effect on the technological progress of Asia and the international community.
